The older girl has been at school for a few years. She is taking the time to teach her baby sister to read so she gets ahead when she starts school.
This exceptional sculpture from Jonathan Mhondorohuma is the finest example of his work we have seen. It was commissioned by the Shona Sculpture Gallery, and we also organised the raw materials for him.
The stone itself is a fascinating mixture of maroon and bottle green shot through with metallic veins. It’s a variety of ‘flower’ serpentine from the Guruve region of the Great Dyke in northern Zimbabwe. It is rarely used these days, though some of the very famous names such as Henry Munyaradzi and Nicholas Mukomberanwa used this stone way back in the 1970s and 1980s, so we made a special effort to source it from a rather derelict mine.
This serpentine stone is very hard and dense and is suitable for outdoor display.
